CableCheck is a fact-checking initiative of Cable Newspaper Journalism Foundation (CNJF). The fact-checking initiative is a distinct unit of the legally registered foundation.
For context, CNJF is a sister organisation of Cable Newspaper Limited, established on November 29, 2011 “to deliver knowledge-driven journalism in the pursuit of Nigeria’s progress”. TheCable.ng was launched on April 29, 2014, to drive the vision through online journalism. From 2016 till date, TheCable has published hundreds of fact-checks, driving accuracy in the media, political, and policy-making landscape in Nigeria. In 2018, TheCable set up (CableCheck), a dedicated fact-checking desk, which has run the fact-checking arm since then.
In 2022, this fact-checking arm was taken over by CNJF, to independently run and fund its activities, especially ahead of the 2023 elections in Nigeria. The team publishes a minimum of four fact checks per month and has done that consistently for years.
CableCheck seeks to provide reliable tools and resources for readers to tackle the menace of fake and misleading materials constantly pushed into the public space from various sources. We monitor the accuracy of claims made in traditional and social media. We also provide a tracker to hold politicians and policymakers accountable for the plans and promises they make to the public. CableCheck is a project of CNJF, supported by the MacArthur Foundation.
